Artist Statement: As a photographer I see our environment in terms of lights and darks, shadows and contrasts. I am driven by the challenge of capturing and defining an image. A traditionalist, using existing natural light and little environmental manipulation, I am forever learning to see in different ways, striving to isolate the ordinary. In the enclosed “En Bois” Series, I explore the textures, tones and colour of wood. Although forgotten, exposed and weathered, there is much beauty in what remains. Each traditional film photographic work is printed individually in the dark room. The full negative is used in all prints whether film or digital.
Recent Exhibitions, Work AND Education: Since graduating in 2003, I have pursued Metalsmithing exclusively. I work full time in a studio/gallery with metalsmiths alike in Toronto. EDUCATION: Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours), N.S.C.A.D, Halifax N.S, Diploma in Jewellery & Metals (Honours), Georgian College, Barrie, ON. EXHIBITIONS: The Commitment Ring - The Lafreniere & Pai Gallery, Ottawa, ON, Le Nouveau Louvre - Gallery Nouvelle Ontario, Sudbury, ON.
CRAFT SHOWS: Cabbagetowne, Moose Show, Muskoka, Distillery, Beaches etc.
Artist Statement: I grew up in Northern Ontario on a rocky island where the dramatic landscape and environment greatly influenced my life. My childhood experiences have become an integral part of my artwork. Organic objects are often used as research material. Reclaimed gold, sterling silver, bronze and shibuichi are my current metals of choice. I continually experiment with various alloying, casting and fabrication techniques and will often adorn my pieces with ethically sourced or recycled gems and pearls.
Recent Exhibitions, Work AND Education: I attended the Ontario College of Art and Design for several years, studying drawing, painting and printmaking.
I have participated in several shows in Toronto, including the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, The Queen West Art Crawl and the Cabbagetown Art and Craft Fair.

I am currently exploring the world of live painting, collaborating with local musicians and making rhythmic drawings on stage. My past exhibitory experience has helped develop this skill, creating an opportunity to paint in public and create works based on an atmosphere.
Artist Statement: The paintings I make focus on the effects of ambiance on technique (as they are often made in strange or loud places). In some works, it is important to see one subject as a fraction of another and viewers are forced to shift focus and discover hidden scenarios. Although most of the works include figurative elements, the process is a contingent one intended to exemplify my own shifts in focus and attention while painting.

Artist Statement: “Though I work with as much intention as I can, my unconscious is the undisputed dominator, and the result is a layered dialogue of lessons learnt, accidents and desires freed.”
“With every piece decisions are made intuitively. Not every decision is right, so then begins the layering process of patching, repairing, and re-exposing, until it has been wrestled tired and has found resolution. It is only now that I feel fulfilled and the work is complete.”

About the Artist
Joanne Currah is an Oakville based Canadian artist who has studied many art forms including sculpture and interior design. In 1980, she began private studies in watercolour painting with a Britush tutor and subsequently, attended Sheridan College and later studied and painted with many accomplished artists.
Style and Focus
Joanne utilizes mixed media in a spontaneous manner producing uplifting work, which tends to be impressionist/expressionist to abstract. With a strong emphasis on colour, her subjects are varied. Joanne’s work is easily recognized by her use of those vibrant colours and avant-garde textures in this contemporary approach. Her on going studies result in an ever-changing body of work however the strong use of colour remains constant.
Artist Statement: My love of colour leads me to paint floral themes in impressionistic style and paintings of abstracts. Both subjects allow me to use all the colours my vision of the work requires. I am told I am a colourist by instinct, laying down colour unaware of any format and it works in complementary style. Texture and contrast contribute importantly. I utilize them to further enhance the perception of the colour. The end result is a painting of uplifting interest, giving the audience something new to discover with each viewing.
My paintings are an expression of self, I paint what I feel not what I see therefore this has produced a unique style, easily recognized as my own.
I do not work with any message in mind other than to convey a feeling of enjoyment and well being to the viewer, a celebration of life. It is my opinion that is a message most welcomed today.
