Artist Statement: The arts have always been part of my life, and painting as a practice has always been present in my everyday life. Over the years, different interests and subject matters have been reflected in my practice. But, for the last several years a steady and predominant theme has figured in my paintings. That is urban life: peoples, our surroundings, the relationship between the human and the environment - the city.
To me painting has a life; a life of its own. Each painting has a personality, character; it talks, it breathes, narrates a story. I truly enjoy being part of this creation.

Artist Statement: Mischief, playfulness and a passion for making objects are the reasons why I am a fibre artist. The quirky elements of my work reveal the funny and eccentric side of me that I rarely show to people.
My inspirations come from film, street art and comic books, which add a narrative aspect to my work. I am a chronic doodler so my pieces often have a very two dimensional aesthetic to them since I am always trying to find new ways of translating my drawings into the tangible.

Shuyu Lu is an emerging textile artist. She was born and raised in China. In 2009, she received a BD in Fibre from the Ontario College of Art and Design. She is always striving to strike a balance between art, craft and design. Shuyu’s works are mainly focused on screen-printing and embroidery. Her works express her feeling about differences in culture, as well as nostalgia for her own Chinese heritage. She is currently an artist in residence in the Harboufront Centre's Studio and a member of Ontario Crafts Council.
Artist Statement: As a craftsperson and artist I am inspired by nostalgia from my joyful Chinese childhood. I am always striving to strike a balance between art, craft and design while making work that is playful, whimsical and even has a sense of humor. I use screen-printing and embroidery to allow my expressive drawing style to stand out vividly.
I came from a country with a different cultural background than Canada. Standing in the middle of Chinese and Western culture, I see Asian concepts and Western characteristics melding together. Inspired by these observations, I make work that expresses my feeling about these differences in culture, as well as nostalgia for my own Chinese heritage.

Artist Statement: I am drawn to the “living” qualities of glass: The way it moves, encloses space, plays with light.
The attention to the moment required when working with hot glass leads, for me, to a meditative repetition. I am compelled to gather the resulting elements, creating a complex whole.
The exquisite structures of seed pods and flowers fascinate me, as they are carriers for new life. To suggest botanical forms with sensual, luminous glass, I hope to make objects which feel alive.
I combine glass blowing, flameworking and mixed media assembly techniques in my work, creating both sculpture and jewellery.
